Romantic How Exactly?

I consider myself a romantic. My favorite poet is Keats. I make wishes on eyelashes and shooting stars. I tear up a bit when I see old people holding hands. And I absolutely adore romantic movies. Really, I can't get enough of them. Even the corny, not-well-written ones.

I have a list of movies I made a while ago that has some classic romantic movies on it, the sure to get your heart aching then bursting ones. And I'm slowly making my way through it. So I was delighted when Eldest Sister told me she had checked out "Doctor Zhivago" from the library because it's on my list. It's pretty long {over 3 hours}, but we were prepared. We watched it this weekend, and I really was excited to see it - Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, gorgeous landscapes, exotic locations, stirring score, epic love story! Okay, honestly, I didn't know much about the movie at all except that it's supposed to be a great love story, and it takes place in Russia. One out of two ain't bad, right?

Seriously, you watch the trailer and tell me what you'd expect to see:

When the movie ended, I turned to my sister and said, "That was weird." Because it was. Unless you think SPOILER ALERT that a man having an affair and suffering through repeated horrible winters and wars is romantic, then this movie is not for you. I was utterly disappointed.

Has this ever happened to you? If so, with what movie? And what's your guaranteed going to make you possibly cry, but then feel good romantic movie?

I had the same feeling with Casablanca. Granted, I was 17/18 at the time. I've thought maybe I should see if my grown-up self will like it better than my teenage self did.

Feel good romantic movies--"An Affair to Remember", "While You Were Sleeping", "Return to Me" and the last scene in "Sixteen Candles".

I agree--what's romantic about Doctor Zhivago??? It's one of my mother-in-law's top 10 movies of ALL TIME, and every time she says it, I want to respond with "WHY?!?" I think it's totally depressing. Actually, I think it would be extremely difficult to write a good romantic story set in Russia during the revolution...maybe that's the real flaw.

Yeah, some of these classics are part of the generation that were made in - i.e., Footloose! I never watched it until after London and I was like, "eh, it's alright."

Don't hate me... I'm just saying.

") Fav Rom's: While you were sleeping and Pride and Prejudice (if you can consider it that).

Becky, I couldn't hate you. But I do have to correct you. Footloose, which I don't consider a classic romantic movie, was made about 20 years after Doctor Zhivago.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Even if it's wrong. :)

When I say Classic, I guess I meant that it was a classic for that decade?? And though, I guess it really isn't a romanance either (ahahah I really missed the mark, eh) I know how you felt after watching DZ.

I do love KB, however and would watch Tremors with you any day you like. :)
