I've been thinking quite a bit lately about first dates. Maybe it's because I watch The Bachelorette {yes, I do - no apologies} and witness so many trainwreck dates. Maybe it's because I was recently reprimanded by one of my teenage friends for not dating more. Yes, it's been . . . cough . . . a little while since I've had one. But whatever. It's also because, despite the bads ones I've had, I think first dates can be great. Thankfully, I've had a few that were so great that I can't help but have hope in future ones.
There was the one where my date and I were sitting on some front steps enjoying a summer evening when suddenly he grabbed my hand and took off running because he heard the music of the ice cream truck. There's the one where my date and I {and few other couples} ate a yummy home-cooked dinner at sunset on the top of the science building of our college. There's also the one that was a complete surprise {the very, very good kind}, and all we did was drink some sodas as he taught me how to play chess.
Don't get me wrong. I love hearing first date disaster stories as much as the next person, but I don't know that we share the really good ones with each other enough. You know you've had them - even if they weren't with your present significant other. And I think I need to hear some more of the good ones. So, this is what I ask of you - let me know about one {or more} of your good first dates. And then ask your friends to share theirs with me too. And your family. And anyone else who knows how to comment on a blog. Maybe all the goodness sharing will help me. And you.

When I lived in Chicago I went on a date with this guy, Charlie. He picked me up and brought me to the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts (where he had attended school). We had a delicious gourmet meal (at a discounted rate but I wasn't going take away points for that). After lunch, we went to the Art Institute of Chicago which is amazing in and of itself but it also was featuring a large Van Gogh exhibit. I'm sure you would appreciate that Charlie was sure to take me to see "The Ferris Bueller painting". It was a great first date.
My first date with Mike was perfect, even though I didn't really know it was a date until like half an hour beforehand. We went fishing in Millcreek canyon and had a campfire afterward. Nothing fancy, just simple and laid back, which I loved.
